How to Customize a Canva Template in 10 Minutes

Downloading a Canva template is the easy part. Getting it to actually match your brand is where most people get stuck.

Here is the process, step by step.

Step 1: Open the template in Canva

After downloading, look for a link in the file (or in your purchase confirmation) to open the template directly in Canva. Click "Use template" — never edit the original.

Step 2: Update your brand colors

Click on any colored element and select your brand hex code. Canva lets you save brand colors in the top toolbar — add your colors once and they are available everywhere.

Swap every colored element: backgrounds, text boxes, buttons, borders.

Step 3: Replace the fonts

Click on any text and change the font to yours. Most templates use 2-3 fonts: a headline display font, a body font, and sometimes an accent. Match them one by one.

Step 4: Add your photos

Drag your photos directly into image placeholders. Canva crops automatically — use the "Position" tool to adjust how the photo sits in the frame.

Step 5: Swap the copy

Replace placeholder text with your own. Keep the same general length — the template was designed for that word count.
